Rockefeller Center in New York City is full of interesting attractions and wonderful art and architecture at all times of the year but it is truly magical at holiday time when the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is on display. This is an image of the bronze-gilded statue of Prometheus, bathed in colored lights as it is seen at the base of the Christmas Tree on the ice rink. Prometheus, as the Greek legend goes, brought fire to mankind. Leonardo Nole was the model who posed for the sculpture. On the wall behind Prometheus is an inscription paraphrased from Aeschylus that reads: "Prometheus, teacher in every art, brought the fire that hath proved to mortals a means to mighty ends." The sculpture, created by Paul Manship, is cited as the fourth-most familiar statue in the United States.
